Boltanski often uses everyday documents - passport photographs, school portraits and family albums - to memorialize ordinary people: the unknown children killed in Under the Influence free ebook the Holocaust, the citizens of a Swiss town or the employees of a Halifax carpet factory. The spaces he creates, often filled with flickering lights and shadows, lie somewhere between little theatres and churches, generating a sense of hushed wonder and a poignant evocation of loss.

Based on groundbreaking scientific research, "Under The Influence" examine the physical factors that set alcoholics and non-alcoholics apart, and suggests a bold, stigma-free way of understanding and treating the alcoholic. How to tell if someone you know is an alcoholic. The progressive stages of alcoholism. How to get an alcoholic into treatment -- and how to choose a treatment program. Why frequently prescribed drugs can be dangerous -- even fatal -- for alcoholics. How to ensure a lasting recovery. "Vital, simple, world-changing information." -- "Co-Evolution Quarterly" " "Under The Influence" will advance by light years the understanding of alcoholism and the recovery process." -- Mel Schulstad, Cofounder, National Association of Alcoholism Counselors

Architecture in Burma: Moments in Time

Description

Architecturally, Burma is both a melting pot and a museum. Boasting a wealth of influences from all of the countries that surround it--India, China, Laos, Thailand, Bhutan, Laos--Burma has also preserved many key examples of religious architectural styles no longer extant in their countries of origin, most famously in Pagan, the country's capital in the ninth to twelfth centuries. Alongside the pagodas of Pagan, Burma's architectural jewel is probably the Shwe Dagon pagoda in Rangoon, a magnificent social hub in the city's center that has also been the site of much political turmoil. During colonial rule, many extraordinary Victorian civic buildings were erected, especially in Rangoon and Mandalay; throughout the country, Buddhist monasteries and villages also offer many fascinating varieties of architecture. Despite a few recent instances of architectural modernization, Burma remains largely an open-air museum, whose buildings embody and chronicle centuries of dynastic squabble and migration of cultural influences. (Such quarrels frequently resulted in new rulers packing up entire palaces and other structures and transporting these by elephant to establish a new seat of government or capital elsewhere.) Authored by Lorie Karnath, President of the Explorer's Club in New York, "Architecture in Burma" is the first serious overview of the astounding architectural treasures of this long-isolated country.

"If our procedure is to work steadily in the direction of drawing as fine art, rather than (as we so often find) beginning from examples of such art, where shall we begin? One attractive possibility is to The Tempest: Sources and Contexts, Criticism, Rewritings and Appropriations free ebook begin at the beginning not the beginning in prehistory, which is already wonderful art, but with our personal beginnings as children. From there it will be the ambitious project of this book to investigate 'the course of drawing, ' from the first marks children make to the greatest graphic arts of different cultures." from the IntroductionPatrick Maynard surveys the rich and varied practices of drawing, from the earliest markings on cave walls to the complex technical schematics that make the modern world possible, from cartoons and the first efforts of preschoolers to the works of skilled draftspeople and the greatest artists, East and West.Despite, or perhaps because of, its ubiquity, drawing as such has provoked remarkably little philosophical reflection. Nonphilosophical writing on the topic tends to be divided between specialties such as art history and mechanics. In this engagingly written and well-illustrated book, Maynard reveals the interconnections and developments that unite this fundamental autonomous human activity in all its diversity. Informed by close discussion of work in art history, art criticism, cognitive and developmental psychology, and aesthetics, Drawing Distinctions presents a theoretically sophisticated yet approachable argument that will improve comprehension and appreciation of drawing in its many forms, uses, and meanings."

The Whole Christ: Legalism, Antinomianism, and Gospel Assurance-Why the Marrow Controversy Still Matters

Description

Since the days of the early church, Christians have wrestled with the relationship between the law and gospel. If, as the apostle Paul says, salvation is by grace and the law cannot save, what relevance does the law have for Christians today? By revisiting the Marrow Controversy--a famous but largely forgotten eighteenth-century debate related to the proper relationship between God's grace and our works--Sinclair B. Ferguson sheds light on this central issue and why it still matters today. In doing so, he explains how our understanding of the relationship between law and gospel determines our approach to evangelism, our pursuit of sanctification, and even our understanding of God himself. Ferguson shows us that the antidote to the poison of legalism on the one hand and antinomianism on the other is one and the same: the life-giving gospel of Jesus Christ, in whom we are simultaneously justified by faith, freed for good works, and assured of salvation.

The Cut of Men's Clothes: 1600-1900

Description

This book traces the evolution of the style of men's dress through a sequence of diagrams accurately scaled down from patterns of actual garments, many of them rare museum specimens. The plates have been selected with the same purpose. Some are photographs of suits for which diagrams have also been given; others, reproduced from paintings and old prints, show the costume complete with its accessories. Quotations from contemporary sources--from diaries, travelers' accounts and tailors' bills--supplement Norah Waugh's text with comments on fashion and lively eyewitness descriptions.

Books That Changed the World: The 50 Most Influential Books in Human History

Description

Books That Changed the World tells the fascinating stories behind 50 books that, in ways great and small, have changed the course of human history. Andrew Taylor sets each text in its historical context and explores its wider influence and legacy. Whether he's discussing the incandescent effect of The Qu'ran, the enduring influence of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, of the way in which Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe galavanized the anti-slavery movement, Taylor has written a stirring and informative testament to human ingenuity and endeavour. Ranging from The Iliad to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the Kama Sutra to Lady Chatterley's Lover, this is the ultimate, thought-provoking read for book-lovers everywhere.

Originally published from 1932 to 1943, Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House" books are classics of children's literature, beloved by millions. But readers who last enjoyed them as children may be astonished at the quiet Books That Changed the World: The 50 Most Influential Books in Human History ebook pdf poetry of Wilder's prose and the force and poignancy of her portrait of the lives of American pioneers. Now The Library of America and editor Caroline Fraser present a new two-volume edition that affirms Wilder's place in the American canon, reintroducing these enduring works to readers young and old. Here, for the first time in two collectible hardcover volumes, are all eight "Little House" novels--brilliant narratives of the early life of Laura Ingalls and her family as they grow up with the country in the woods, on the plains, and finally in the small towns of the advancing American frontier--plus the posthumous novella "The First Four Years," which recounts the early years of the author's marriage to Almanzo Wilder. This second volume includes "By the Shores of Silver Lake," "The Long Winter," "Little Town on the Prairie," "These Happy Golden "Years, and "The First Four Years," plus two rare autobiographical pieces that reveal real life events not included in the novels and address the inevitable question: what happened next? A companion volume gathers "Little House in the Big Woods," "Farmer Boy," " Little House on the Prairie," and "On the Banks of Plum Creek." Each volume features a newly-researched chronology of Laura Ingalls Wilder's life and career, and helpful notes. The volumes are also available in a deluxe collector's boxed set, "The Little House Books: The Library of America Collection."
